I’m based in Seattle, Washington and love UX Research!

I’ve worked for Google on the Google Cloud Platform, ResMed, and UnitedHealth Group’s Optum brand as well as freelanced for nonprofits Orcasound and DemocracyLab.

When I’m not talking to users or synthesizing data, you can find me snowboarding in Washington and Oregon state mountains during the winter and hiking in the nearby mountains or hanging out at Green Lake and the Locks in Seattle when the sun is out.

Global Navigation Redesign

UX Researcher | October 2023

Marine Conservation

Orcasound is made up of a main content-oriented website and a collection of growing web-apps. The website and web-apps are made up of multiple project teams, and each team was redesigning global navigation of the website.

To unify global navigation design efforts, I created a UX project team that made 2 concepts for desktop and mobile. I planned, conducted, synthesized, and presented recommendations to move to a single design across device types.

New cloud product for media production

UX Researcher | November 2021

Cloud Platform

I led a study to understand what features should be included in a new cloud product for media production that would be available on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

I put together a study plan that included the problem overview, objectives, research questions, interview questions, and a schedule of deadlines.

Google’s internal recruitment service was used to find and schedule participants for the study.

I wrote a script and co-moderated interview sessions with the Senior UX Researcher.

I synthesized participant data in Google Sheets. I designed a final share out deck using Google Slides and presented to team members and stakeholders.

I submitted 8 recommendations to Google’s internal ticketing system Buganizer.

Prototype concept cloud product for media production

UX Researcher | January 2022

Cloud Platform

I led a study that presented a prototype of a product for media production to potential users to understand how it addressed their needs and any functionality pain points.

I put together a study plan that included the problem overview, objectives, research questions, contextual inquiry-oriented questions, tasks, and a schedule of deadlines.

The Project Manager had developed connections with businesses that would benefit from what the product offered, and recruited participants for the study.

I wrote a script and co-moderated interview sessions with the Project Manager.

I synthesized participant data in Google Sheets. I designed a final share out deck using Google Slides and presented to team members and stakeholders.

I made recommendations on how to improve the product based on problems observed during the participant sessions. I also presented findings of how the product functioned based on participant behavior.

Enterprise platform concept cloud product for business

UX Researcher | January 2022

Cloud Platform

I synthesized and presented data from a study for an enterprise platform concept cloud product that the Lead UX Researcher ran with potential users to understand how the platform addressed their needs and any identified pain points.

I took notes from recorded sessions and affinity mapped using Google Slides.

I put together a share out deck and presented to the Project Manager, stakeholder, and UX Team members. I recommended design changes based on participant pain points observed during sessions. I collaborated with the UX Designer to make changes based on study findings during the rapid iterative concept testing study.

Onboarding user journey for internal volunteers

UX Researcher | April 2022

Nonprofit

The onboarding experience for internal volunteers was anecdotally identified as confusing, and I collaborated with other UX Researchers to identify the existing onboarding user journey to find pain points and recommend an improved experience.

I gathered the onboarding experiences from DemocracyLab volunteers and put together a user journey representing the typical onboarding flow. I then identified places in the onboarding user journey that volunteers reported pain points. I made recommendations on how to address those pain points based on suggestions from volunteers and conventional onboarding practices.

A survey was put together by UXR team members and sent out to DemocracyLab volunteers. I synthesized the data and presented recommendations.

Listening web app desktop redesign for live hydrophone streaming

UX Researcher | May 2020

Marine Conservation

Orcasound was transitioning from the first iteration of the listening web app to the second iteration. I was asked to run a usability study to understand user feedback for the new listening web app. There was a beta version that had been developed, and this was used for the usability study.

Findings and recommendations, including a prototype of design changes based on participant feedback, were presented to the stakeholder and software engineer.

The usability study led to a persona discovery study as well as the next major redesign of both the listening web app and the main website.

Persona characterization for all Orcasound design rationale

UX Researcher | August 2020

Marine Conservation

While running the usability study for the beta version of the listening web app, I discovered that there were different types of users that had separate motivations and behaviors related to listening to the hydrophones.

I ran a persona discovery study to characterize the different Orcasound personas.

The 3 characterized personas from the study have provided design rationale for all redesigns and new web apps that have been researched and designed by various Orcasound UX project teams.

Sitemap redesign for overall website architecture

UX Researcher | December 2020

Marine Conservation

Orcasound’s information architecture (IA) was unorganized. It was a legacy system that needed to be updated and simplified. As new content was added to the website over time, it was added via links within the web copy. This created a website that had over 770 webpages, with an unorganized link structure. While the listening web-app was hand-coded, the main Orcasound site was hosted on a Content Management System (CMS), WordPress. This created a dimorphic user experience that needed to be improved with a unified IA structure between the two different sites. I led a project team to run an open card sort study to identify the best way to restructure the overall IA of the website and the listening web-app.

A redesigned site map resulted from the study and impacted the redesign of the entire Orcasound website.

Open Card Sort

Listening web app desktop iterative redesign for live hydrophone streaming

UX Researcher | December 2021

Marine Conservation

The redesigned map-based listening web app was ready for user testing. Since this was a major update from the previous static hydrophone page interface to a dynamic map interface with an increase in hydrophone listening feature complexity, making sure that users could easily interact with the new design required usability testing.

The study goal was to measure the usability across both desktop and mobile versions of the redesigned listening web app in a first round of usability testing and then making iterative design changes based on user feedback for a second round of testing to measure the change in usability.

I led a UX Research team to run the iterative usability study for the desktop design, and another UX Researcher led a project team for the mobile design.

After updating the desktop redesign after the second iteration usability testing round, the redesigned listening web app was sent to production.
